Making Sense of the Bible by Adam Hamilton
Currently I'm reading 'Making Sense of the Bible' by Adam Hamilton. What a delightful and eye opening book. In Hamilton's clear and easily understood style the Bible is laid open and explained. I've been studying the Bible for many years and I am still learning a number of things about it through this book. Of course, after the simpler, straight forward things (such as how the Bible came to be the way it is) Hamilton gets into thornier issues ("Were Adam and Eve real people?", how to deal with the apparently violent God of the Old Testament, etc.).
As with the other books I've read by Hamilton I find it very informative and well thought out and very nearly inspiring. I don't think Hamilton is trying to be inspiring. I think he is just trying to explain something that many people have a hard time understanding. He succeeded admirably.
This is 'Bible 101' and 'Bible 102' for people who want to learn more about the Bible but don't feel comfortable joining a study group because they feel ignorant about it. Start here. Then you will be well prepared to dig deeper.
